I did it! I Entered Portrait Artist of the Year 2025: My Submission.
There’s something both thrilling and terrifying about a blank canvas - the first brushstroke, the layering of colour, the delicate balancing act of light and shadow. In my latest YouTube video, I’m sharing my process as I create a new portrait, one that I’ve entered into Portrait Artist of the Year 2025.
Just so i’m super clear, I’m not on the show (This is my entry so, I find out whether i’ve got through in a couple of weeks. Wish me luck!), but this piece is my official submission. It’s a glimpse into the way I work, from initial sketch to final flourish. Take a look:
Portrait Artist of the Year 2025: Why I’m Entering
Every year, Portrait Artist of the Year showcases an inspiring mix of artistic talent, creativity, and nerve. Entering the competition is more than just a challenge - it’s a chance to push my own boundaries and put my work in front of a new audience. I typically paint from photos, alone in my studio - so i’d love the chance to paint a real life sitter and see what I can do in just 4 hours!
For me, portraiture is about more than technical skill. It’s about capturing a story, an emotion, a presence. Whether I make it to the next stage or not, I’m glad i’m pushing myself to try new things. I’ll be sharing more about my art, process,, what drives me in upcoming posts and videos. If you love oil painting as much as I do, stick around—there’s plenty more to come.
